Question: What is customer owned underground piping?

Answer: It is any steel or iron pipe downstream of the gas meter that exists below ground level outside the foundation walls. In most cases, the piping downstream of the meter goes directly into the house near the meter. Gas piping that exists in the crawl space of a home is not considered underground. For more information, download our Customer Owned Underground Piping brochure as a PDF file. (If you don't have the Acrobat reader, you may download it from Adobe's website.)

Question: How do I know if my property has customer owned underground piping?

Answer: Most often, customer owned underground piping is found serving gas appliances outside of the structure (i.e. pool boilers, shops).

Typically, but not always, the easiest way to identify customer owned underground piping is to go to your meter and look at the downstream piping (the piping going from the meter to your structure). If there is a tee in the piping and the line coming out of the tee is steel or iron and runs downward and into the ground, you most likely have customer owned underground piping. If the underground piping is plastic it is not subject to the same requirements as steel and iron pipe.

Question: What do I do if I have customer owned underground piping?

Answer: You need to protect if from corroding or deteriorating which, if it should occur, could cause a leak in the line and possibly an incident. To obtain help in protecting your customer owned underground piping from corrosion, please call your local plumber.
